The blue tarp of Sarlat...
I put the ugly blue tarp up in January to stop rain from leaking into the stonework while we wait for permission to renew it...

Simple Gifts

Having lived in a city apartment for so many years - in our palazzo in Todi, then the Ile Saint Louis apartment in Paris - the simple gifts of the countryside in early summer are noted and welcomed.

We’ve seen our shy young visitor twice now, munching grass quite near the house but always with ears alert and that tenuous, frightened stance that makes deer so compelling. Is he/she alone, we wonder? Are there others in our woods? How can we protect the faun when hunting season begins?

Our roses are continuing to bloom, albeit with much less show than the gorgeous specimens dotting the yards and gardens of our neighbors. Our seller had her gardener trim them severely just before the closing, we guess at exactly the wrong moment. But perhaps next year…

The big lavender bush on the south terrace is now bursting with color and sending its rich scent into our open windows, and the two cherry trees are shedding fruit faster than I can pluck and eat them. Sadly, Francesco is missing this treat – cherries are among his favorites – and I can only hope his return in mid-June will not be too late for at least a taste.
