Dan & Francesco are at it again! Our latest renovation project is a 16th century townhouse in the heart of the Perigord Noir.
The blue tarp of Sarlat...

I put the ugly blue tarp up in January to stop rain from leaking into the stonework while we wait for permission to renew it...

Arcadio the brave...
It has been a terrible and stressful few days for us.
Arcadio was shot in the front left leg by a hunter last Wednesday afternoon but managed to make it home, bleeding and lame. Thank god we were around the place when he got here. We rushed him to our vet in Thenon who predicted the worst - possible amputation if the bone structure was too fractured inside.
We took him to a specialized clinic north of Brive, about a thirty minute drive away, where he had an x-ray. Fortunately the leg can be repaired but it will take a day-long operation (Monday) and then recuperation with a metal brace attached on the outside of his leg for 8-10 weeks. It will cost us about 600 euros but of course that is no issue for us - we were both in an awful state emotionally thinking of worse things.
So we returned from Brive (actually a little village called Donzenac in the neighboring department of Correze) on Friday night quite relieved. We have Arcadio for the weekend, hobbling around as best he is able.
Neither of us can even begin to imagine the sort of horrid, idiotic mentality of someone who would purposefully aim a hunting rifle at a lovely little cat - and we are asking around to our few neighbors to try to learn if anyone saw hunters last Wednesday afternoon. We can (and will today) go to the Gendarmerie in Thenon to register this crime - but to what avail?
Hunters worldwide seem to have the idea they can do what they want and get away with it. They trespass with impunity and fire their guns in all directions heedless of who or what might be nearby. This is mushroom season, for example, and the woods are full of people, families, hunting for them. Hunting is officially limited to weekends - but here it was a Wednesday and they were out shooting nonetheless.
We are trying to be positive. Arcadio could easily have been killed - if the stupid hunter had been a better shot. He might not have dragged himself home. We might still be searching for him. He might have had to have his leg amputated. As it is, we have some things to be extremely grateful for - yes?
He is a very good patient - he is eating and drinking normally and bravely seems to be determined to get around even with his leg totally useless and just hanging limp. It is pitiful to see - but at least he is alive and with us.
